I've been wondering how well those work...I didn't know anyone who had one! That would probably be a good option for spots instead of waiting until we can do the whole carpet.

just a thought: i've have one of these for about 6 years and it works very well. we only have wall-to-wall carpet in the bedrooms and an area rug in the living room. this is great because you just pull it out, add a little water & soap (honestly, i've been doing warm water with just a dollop of dish soap, which you aren't supposed to do, but had worked fine), and scrub the spot. it is $90 on this site, but considering you spent $60 on one rental it would probably be worth it.

although, i would like to get a full size upright steam cleaner at some point.

Good write up. The part that was missed is that I was the one cleaning the area rug in the Living Room... maybe my walking backward technique was a little too slow, and I may have overlapped my passes a lot more, which may have contributed to the added moisture left behind. Bingo - I just got some inspiration for a blog post on atrackaday... check back on Saturday and all will be revealed!
